What to Do in Uncertain Times

What to Do in Uncertain Times: Three Ways to Support Yourself at Home

Uncertainty can feel overwhelming, especially in today's world, where political landscapes are constantly shifting, global challenges seem never-ending, and personal lives may feel upended. As a psychotherapist, it's not uncommon for clients to express feelings of anxiety, fear, or confusion during these times. It’s important to recognize that while external events may feel out of our control, there are actions we can take within our homes to cultivate calm, resilience, and self-support. Here are three practical ways to take care of yourself when the world feels unpredictable.

1. Create a Routine that Works for You

In times of uncertainty, creating a sense of structure at home can be incredibly grounding. A routine provides a sense of predictability and control, which is especially comforting when external circumstances feel chaotic. Even if it's just as simple as waking up at the same time each day, taking breaks, and setting small, manageable goals, these small steps can provide a sense of accomplishment and stability.

Try incorporating activities into your routine that nurture your body and mind, such as light exercise, meditation, journaling, or a creative hobby. Doing something you enjoy can significantly reduce stress, even if it’s just for a short period each day.

2. Practice Mindfulness and Deep Breathing

In moments of stress or anxiety, it can be easy to spiral into negative thinking. Practicing mindfulness or deep breathing techniques can help center your mind and bring your focus back to the present. Simple practices, like focusing on your breath for a few minutes, can help activate the body’s relaxation response and reduce feelings of overwhelm.

Consider setting aside time each day to practice mindfulness—whether it's through deep breathing, guided meditation, or simply paying attention to the sensations of your environment. Over time, this will help train your mind to stay calm and present, even when external events feel uncertain.

3. Limit Exposure to News and Social Media

The constant flow of news and social media updates can contribute to feelings of anxiety and stress. While it’s important to stay informed, it’s equally important to recognize when it’s time to take a break. If you find yourself feeling drained or overwhelmed by the news, set clear boundaries for when and how often you engage with it.

You might also want to consider unsubscribing from negative news sources or limiting social media use, especially if it’s triggering feelings of anger, sadness, or confusion. Instead, try focusing on positive, uplifting activities or consuming media that supports your mental well-being, like watching a movie, reading a book, or engaging in a calming hobby.
